ADVANCE CIRCULAR Knowledge taxonomy - Overview of 26 competences in the field of circular economy in tourism

The tool provides a structured framework of skills and knowledge defined for the tourism sector and related fields from the CE perspective. It is intended for both companies and vocational education and training institutions (VET) for planning educational programmes that address the challenges of climate change and sustainable development.

The competences are divided into 5 categories based on key elements of the circular economy (CE):

  1. Priority to renewable resources – renewable, reusable and non-toxic resources as materials and energy.
  2. Extending product life cycles – maintenance, repair and upgrading of products for as long use as possible and possibilities for reuse.
  3. Use of waste as a resource – reuse and recycling of waste as secondary resources.
  4. Circular design – considering circularity already at the design stage by selecting appropriate materials and designing for long life cycles.
  5. Digital technologies – tracking, optimisation of resource use and connection via digital platforms.
